Apple Maps Navigation Errors – Problems with Pronunciation and Roundabout Instructions
1. Apple Maps – Convenient Navigation, but Not Without Its Flaws
Apple Maps is a navigation app available on iPhones and also integrated with CarPlay and other Apple devices. It offers route planning, traffic information, and voice-guided directions.
Unfortunately, Apple Maps navigation errors can significantly reduce the comfort of travelling, particularly when drivers need to react quickly to an instruction. The problems include incorrect pronunciation of Polish place names, inconsistent instructions at roundabouts, and unexpected switching between languages. Even a good map is not enough if voice directions are unclear or sound different from what users expect.
2. The Main Advantages and Navigation Errors in Apple Maps

The app has several important advantages:
- Integration with the Apple ecosystem: Convenient use with an iPhone, Apple Watch, and CarPlay.
- Traffic information: Road disruptions and incidents along the route are taken into account.
- Trip planning: Route calculation and the ability to use offline maps in supported regions.
- Location and ETA sharing: Sharing your location and estimated arrival time with other Apple users.
- Reporting road incidents: Adding public reports about road disruptions, such as accidents, roadworks, speed checks, and similar events.
Unfortunately, over the past few months, some surprising inconsistencies have emerged that make navigation more difficult to use:
- Incorrect pronunciation of place names: The app sometimes confuses the Polish sounds “ł” and “t”. For example, Wołomin may be pronounced as “Wotomin” and Słupsk as “Stupsk” — something we have experienced firsthand.
- Inconsistent roundabout instructions: The app may use different instructions, such as “Take the second exit”, “Continue through the roundabout”, “At the next roundabout, turn right”, or “Go straight through the roundabout”. The lack of consistency can make it harder to quickly identify the correct exit. Previously, all roundabout instructions specified the exit number, which drivers could reliably count while driving. That was an excellent solution.
- Mixing languages: An instruction may begin in English and finish in Polish. English instructions may also occasionally be pronounced phonetically, producing something like “ro und a but”. Street names can be affected as well, making the entire instruction surprising and difficult to understand.

3. How Can You Reduce Problems with Apple Maps Navigation?
If you notice Apple Maps navigation errors, check your language and voice settings, install any available updates, and familiarise yourself with the route before setting off. If necessary, compare the directions with those provided by another navigation app.
Most importantly, do not make sudden manoeuvres solely to follow an unclear instruction. Follow road signs and observe road safety rules.
Apple Maps can be a convenient solution, but the quality of voice instructions has a real impact on driving. It is therefore worth reporting recurring errors and considering an alternative navigation app if these problems make it harder to reach your destination safely.
